If you’re waiting on one of the season’s hot rides, you’re going to have to be patient. Virtually all automakers have been hit by the microchip shortage that’s affecting production, but it’s even worse when it’s an in-demand model and people are already waiting on their orders.

A GM exec said the company is “not even close” to fulfilling demand for the Chevrolet C8 Corvette, while Ford’s Bronco is sold out for at least two years, and orders are already piling up for the compact Maverick and all-electric F-150 Lightning pickup trucks, and they haven’t even gone into production yet.

Tony Johnson, Chevrolet’s market executive, told GM Authority that the Corvette is traditionally a fast-selling car, and with COVID-19-related restrictions affecting production and parts supplies, the automaker has “more orders than we can handle.” Johnson said the company is working on solutions, but wouldn’t specify what they are. When a large number of customer orders crashed head-on into pandemic restrictions, GM had to push ahead many of its orders for 2020 vehicles to model-year-2021 production — and now it looks like those who put down a deposit on a 2021 Corvette might end up far enough behind that they’ll be getting a 2022 instead.

Meanwhile, Ford is struggling to fulfill orders for its all-new Bronco, which started production on June 15, 2021 at the company’s Michigan Assembly Plant, which built the first Bronco in 1965. Ford said it has received more than 125,000 orders for the Bronco, and more than 190,000 reservations for one in Canada and the U.S.

Jim Farley, Ford’s CEO, was interviewed on June 17 at Deutsche Bank’s Global Auto Industry Conference. During the interview, Farley said the company has more than 100,000 orders for the Lightning and almost 40,000 for the Maverick, which was unveiled to the public on June 8. And buyers better be prepared to wait.

Farley said the company has “like two years of order bank for Bronco, and Mach-E is months and months and months around the world. Same for Lightning. So I think it’s going to be a while.”

As for the microchip shortage, Farley said the company will have to “handle our supply chain differently” for digital components in future, and that for these vital electronic modules right now, he estimated that it will be “sometime during 2022 before we’ll get to a normal level of availability.”
