THREE suspected house raiders who died after their car smashed into a lorry were using the vehicles of innocent and unsuspecting female associates to commit burglaries.

Gardai believe Graham Taylor, 31, Carl Freeman, 26 and Dean Maguire, 29, used the cars of innocent females with no convictions without their knowledge to avoid arousing suspicion during their illegal sprees.

And investigators suspect the BMW which crashed into a truck on the N7 was registered to a female pal of one of the three friends.

The trio, all from Tallaght in Dublin, lost their lives after their car smashed into the lorry and burst into flames as they drove on the wrong side of the road.

‘TRAGIC INCIDENT’

A source said: “This is a very tragic incident in which three young men have lost their lives in a horrific car crash.

“All three were suspects in a number of burglaries and they used the cars of female associates to move aroun freely.

“They were trying to get away from the gardai on Wednesday night but it’s impossible to say if they had incriminating items in the car because it was so badly damaged.”

We can also reveal how Freeman — who choked a cancer stricken pensioner for just €200 during a raid in Co Wicklow in 2015 — was once described as a “good person” by a close female associate who contacted the Irish Sun after we revealed details of his involvement in the horrific house raid.

Freeman — who had links to other dangerous criminals in the capital — later received a five-year jail term for the terrifying house raid.

MOBILE CRIME GANG

The woman said: “Carl is not a bad lad really — he’s had a tough life.

“He would have been easily swayed and manipulated by others. It’s unfortunate he got involved in something like this, but deep down he’s a good lad.”

All three of the suspects had close links to one of the three main ‘Mobile Organised Crime Gangs’ operating in the Tallaght area.

One of the mobs is run by associates of slain gangster Fat Andy Connors.

FATAL CRASH

The fatal incident happened on the northbound carriageway between the areas of Citywest and Baldonnel, in Dublin, at 11.40pm on Wednesday.

Before travelling on the wrong side of the road, the car had been followed by gardai after it was spotted driving erratically in the Cheeverstown area.

But officers stopped following the BMW 3 Series once it entered onto the carriageway over safety concerns.

The truck driver suffered serious leg injuries but his condition is not life-threatening.

As part of their investigation, gardai will now try and establish the gang’s movements before the crash by trawling through CCTV.

The trio are yet to be formally identified, with gardai using DNA to confirm their identities.

‘POOR FAMILIES’

Tributes were last night still being paid to the friends on social media. One post on Facebook said: “Their poor families will be destroyed.”

Another read: “Can’t believe you’re all gone, RIP lads.”

And another said: “Their poor families should now be allowed to grieve in peace.”

Another added: “Rest in peace Dean. May you get the best bed in heaven, you will never be forgotten one of the best man I ever knew.”

Friends also continued to leave floral tributes at the scene, inset.

Cops have urged anyone who may have witnessed the shocking event to get in touch with them.

A Garda spokesperson added: “In particular, any witnesses who may have seen a dark blue BMW 3 Series vehicle (06-D-47768) in the areas of Belgard, Citywest or the N7 between 11.15pm and 12.00am are asked to come forward.

“Gardai can be contacted at Clondalkin Garda Station on 01 666 7600 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.”

The Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission is also investigating the late-night crash as one of five referrals to the watchdog in the last five days.
