Why used cars, gas, airfares, meat and other products are getting more expensive

Why used cars, gas, airfares, meat and other products are getting more expensive

Consumers are paying more for a range of products, including bacon, blouses and used Buicks, as the economy rebounds strongly from the covid-led recession with considerable help from Congress and the Federal Reserve.

The overarching question is whether these price increases will stick — and for how long. Fed officials have so far maintained that the hikes will dissipate fairly quickly, though some economists warn the trend could be more lasting.

Costs of raw materials, such as lumber, paper, steel, glass and plastic, as well as manufacturing and shipping, are rising in line with rebounding demand. A widespread microchip shortage is adding to retailers’ struggles by making it harder to automate supply chains and keep operations running smoothly, said Greg Portell, a partner in the consumer practice at consulting firm Kearney.

“You have inflationary pressures from two sides: The cost of materials is going up at the same time that demand is rising,” he said. “Typically you have one or the other but now you have both, which is creating the crunch.”

The recent run-up comes after years of lagging inflation. While product prices can fluctuate, policymakers generally aim to keep annual inflation running at about 2 percent.

Generally, Portell said, he expects prices to stabilize in 18 to 24 months, as suppliers and manufacturers catch up to pent-up demand for consumer goods like clothing and furniture.

In the meantime, here are some of the categories where prices are climbing. The charts below show how prices for everyday goods have changed since 2019 and 2020, as reported in the consumer price index released this week by the Labor Department.

Used cars and trucks

Cars are in high demand, but in short supply — and that, economists say, is particularly true of the country’s stash of used vehicles. Early in the pandemic, Americans wary of public transportation snapped up used cars to help with commutes and errands. Since then, demand has continued to climb beyond supply, due in part to a microchip shortage and factory shutdowns that have slowed the production of new vehicles.

Used car prices rose by 7.3 percent last month, accounting for roughly one-third of overall price inflation, according to the Labor Department. Economists say they expect those hikes to continue in the near-term, pushing up commuting costs for low-wage workers who are rejoining the labor market.

“We are entering what will no doubt be a long, hot summer as consumers continue to spend faster than most producers and service providers can keep up,” Diane Swonk, chief economist at Grant Thornton, wrote in a note to clients this week.

Furniture

Rising prices for materials such as leather, steel, acrylic and lumber have driven up prices for desks, sofas and other high-demand furniture. Manufacturing and shipping have gotten more expensive too, as companies deal with overwhelmed factories and clogged ports. Retailers say just about every step of the supply chain has become costlier and more cumbersome in recent months, leading to steadily climbing prices. Ocean freight shipping fees from Asia to the United States have quadrupled in some cases, from about $1,500 per container to $6,000 in the past year, according to Mark Yeager, chief executive of Redwood Logistics.

“Individually, any one of [those hurdles] is not that significant and could be overcome,” Kurt Darrow, chief executive of La-Z-Boy, said in a recent earnings call. “But when you get them coming at you from six or seven different directions, the magnitude of it adds up.”

Gas

The average price for a gallon of gas has risen nearly 50 percent in the past year, from $2 to more than $3, according to AAA. Analysts say tanker shortages and the recent cyberattack on the Colonial Pipeline, which supplies nearly half of the East Coast’s gasoline, have contributed to an increase in crude oil prices.

But, critically, demand is also up, with Americans hitting the road for summer travel. Analysts say recent stimulus checks, which many families spent on necessities like food and gas, have also helped contribute to rising consumption.

Average gas prices have risen for seven straight weeks and are likely to peak midsummer, according to Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.

“Last year, as a result of the sudden plummet in gasoline demand, oil companies took three, four steps backwards,” he said. “They laid off employees and now, like many other sectors, are struggling to bring back labor. We may be stuck with these high prices for a while.”

Beef and pork

Bacon, steaks and other types of meat products are getting pricier as the industry grapples with labor shortages, as well as rising grain and energy costs. Costco says it’s paying as much as 20 percent more for beef than it did a year ago, due in part to rising feed and transportation costs. Demand is soaring, too, as restaurants reopen and countries like China and Vietnam clamor for American pork and beef exports.

Adding to the challenge, industry experts say, is a slowdown in processing times. Meat processing plants have been particularly hard-hit by covid outbreaks that have hindered operations.

Jeanne Gustaf, who lives near Seattle, says she’s noticed the price of meat has been rising at her local Safeway. Frozen breakfast sausages have jumped from $1.99 to $2.49, she said, and other products like bacon are costlier, too.

“We love bacon but we just can’t buy it much anymore because it costs more than $8 a pack,” the 49-year-old book designer said. “That seems like a small thing, but it adds up.”

Washing machines and dryers

A semiconductor shortage, combined with surging prices for steel and plastic, is driving up the cost of washing machines and dryers. Appliance giant Whirlpool recently raised prices by as much as 12 percent, with executives saying that rising material prices have already cost the company $1 billion. Cost increases, they said, are likely to peak in the fall, though they feel confident that consumers will keep buying, thanks in part to booming housing sales.

“Demand is a sustained and multiyear trend,” chief executive Marc Bitzer said in an April earnings call. “It’s not a blip.”

Airfare

After a year of rock-bottom rates, plane tickets are getting costlier just in time for summer travel. Many airlines, which dramatically cut flight schedules during the pandemic, are reporting a surge in bookings as newly vaccinated Americans make up for lost time. The result, economists say, is a classic case of low supply and high demand. And airlines are more than eager to make up for the billions in losses they’ve reported over the last year.

Fares are already creeping up to — and sometimes beyond — pre-pandemic levels. Average ticket prices for domestic travel have risen 7 percent since May, while international fares are up 13 percent in the same period, according to financial research firm Bernstein. At Alaska Airlines, for example, fares for peak flights are higher than they were in 2019, as part of a “short but stable climb” in prices, chief commercial officer Andrew Harrison recently said on an earnings call.

But analysts say skyrocketing airfares aren’t likely to be permanent. They expect prices to stabilize once pent-up demand slows and more Americans are back in the office.

Clothes

Apparel retailers slashed inventory early in the pandemic when it was unclear when — or what — consumers would be ready to buy again. But now that shoppers are snapping up shirts, dresses and suits again, stores are finding that they’re not having to offer the steep discounts they once did. National chains are scaling back on promotions, in part to make up for rising manufacturing and transportation costs.

Analysts say a more complex supply chain — due in part to a scramble to diversify operations to dodge tariffs — have also added to costs.

“It used to be that apparel would go from country A to port B to ship C,” Portell said. “But the supply chain is much more complicated now — there are multiple sources, multiple suppliers — and all of that adds to the cost.”

Jeff Gordon’s 2009 Chevy Corvette ZR1 Up For Auction

The NASCAR legend sold the car to charity and now it’s on Bring a Trailer.

Jeff Gordon 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 parked outside garage

There’s no doubt that racing great Jeff Gordon was a Chevrolet dude, having driven cars by that automaker including his legendary No. 24 racer on the NASCAR circuit for years. A four-time Winston Cup champion before he retired in 2015, Gordon maintained that dedication to Chevrolet with his purchase of a 2009 Corvette ZR1, a supercar he later gave to a charity that sold it in 2019. Now, it’s up for grabs and by all accounts is still in great shape.

While Gordon’s car was among more than 500 other vehicles bearing a cyber-gray metallic finish with carbon-fiber fenders, floor panels, and the hood, gawkers can easily view the engine through the polycarbonate window in front. Visible through that layer is the car’s 6.2-liter LS8 V-8 engine, capable of delivering 638 horsepower and 604 pound-feet of torque.

All that energy from the engine is delivered from the engine, which also comes with a dry-sump lubrication system, to the rear wheels via the Corvette’s rear-mounted six-speed manual transaxle system. It comes with a fitted transmission and axle coolers as well as a limited-slip differential.

No doubt potential buyers will have given Gordon’s old ride plenty of attention in the performance department, wondering why it only has 835 miles on the odometer. Too bad, because subsequent owners could have taken full advantage of the comfortable confines of the interior that carries on with the cyber-gray color scheme. The upholstery on those heated, power-adjustable seats is ebony leather with carbon fiber lining the rest of the cabin.

Whoever lands this catch will also be able to enjoy the Bose sound system, an infotainment package that includes a CD player, in-car navigation, and Bluetooth amenities. Additional features include dual-zone automatic climate control, a telescopic steering wheel, and a universal garage remote.

The winning bidder will also take advantage of an elaborate instrumental panel on the steering wheel dash, aluminum wheels with a set of Michelin Select Ride Control tires, carbon-ceramic brakes, and xenon headlights with integrated fog lights. At this writing, the bidding was just less than $70,000 for the ZR1, with five days left to go.

New missile corvette to be delivered early

New missile corvette to be delivered early

  • By Lo Tien-pin and Jonathan Chin / Staff reporter, with staff writer

The Ta Chiang, an upgraded version of the navy’s Tuo Chiang-class missile corvette, is to be delivered this month, one month ahead of schedule, a military source said yesterday.

The 685-tonne Ta Chiang is the first in a planned series of high-performance ships modeled after the Tuo Chiang, the source said.

The navy is to conduct evaluations in the next few days before accepting the ship, the source added.

The Ta Chiang is heavier than its predecessor’s 567 tonnes after anti-aircraft weapons were added to the original design at the navy’s request, the source said.

The guided-missile corvette is equipped with two eight-cell Sky Sword II anti-aircraft missile launchers, instead of two six-cell launchers as reported by media, the source said, confirming an image of the ship taken by outside observers.

Other armament include Brave Wind II and Brave Wind III surface-to-surface anti-ship missiles, among others, the source said.

As the Ta Chiang’s tonnage, equipment and systems have been beefed up substantially compared with the Tuo Chiang’s original design, the planned missile corvettes might be designated as Ta Chiang-class instead of Tuo Chiang-class, the source added.

The Ministry of National Defense has yet to make a decision on the issue, the source said.

Admiral Huang Shu-kuang (黃曙光) reportedly visited Lung Teh Shipbuilding Co and CSBC Corp, Taiwan’s shipyards yesterday, his last day as the chief of the general staff, in a display of his attention to the program.

In other news, after a six-month training program, six UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters received last year by the National Airborne Service Corps are this month to be deployed for rescue missions.

The ministry has allocated 15 of the 60 Black Hawk helicopters purchased from the US to the corps to be used in airborne search-and-rescue missions.

The final batch of six helicopters earmarked for the corps arrived at Kaohsiung Harbor in October last year, the corps said in a statement.

They have since been painted red and stationed in Kaohsiung, the corps said.

The helicopter brigade has spent the past six months training so that their crew can conduct day and nighttime search missions at sea, the corps said.

Crew have also enhanced their mid-air rescue capabilities, it said.

The helicopters are equipped with forward-looking infrared imaging systems, as well as searchlights, and radar and satellite communication systems.

Their addition is a huge boost to the nation’s airborne search-and-rescue capabilities, the corps said.

Rush Drummer Neil Peart's Corvette Split Window Heads To Auction

Rush Drummer Neil Peart’s Corvette Split Window Heads To Auction

A 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Split Window Coupe is a special car no matter what the circumstances. The first year of the Corvette’s second generation, the 1963 Sting Ray was a clean-sheet design, featuring both coupe and convertible versions, fully independent suspension at all four corners, a full perimeter frame, and styling unlike anything from any other American manufacturer. It is little wonder the sale of a Corvette Split Window Coupe formerly owned by a Rock-n-Roll legend would create a fervor.

Neil Peart was the rhythmic backbone of the Canadian rock band Rush. Peart joined the band in 1974 after the departure of John Rutsey, and remained the percussionist and lyricist until his passing in 2020. Rush holds the number-three position for most consecutive gold or platinum studio albums by a rock band.

Peart was enamored of cars from an early age, describing himself as a “car lover since infancy.” As a child, he collected small diecast cars. Growing up, Peart built numerous models, a hobby he continued whilst touring with Rush. “I had a briefcase-sized road case containing a kit or two, paints, dozens of miniature tools, and an aerosol airbrush. On days off, my hotel room became a little workshop, and I had the pleasure of solitary concentration on a tiny, controllable bit of reality.”

After moving from Canada to southern California in 2000, Peart began to collect some of his dream cars. The Corvette Split Window Coupe was one of a collection of silver cars he called his “Silver Surfers.” Peart explained the name, writing “The title ‘Silver Surfers’ for my collection of cars occurred to me while driving the DB5 up and down the Pacific Ocean. Because it felt right to me, I  guess – the idea that I was just one of the wave riders.”

Included in Mr. Peart’s collection is a 1964 Aston Martin DB5, a 1964 Shelby Cobra 289 (the only car in the collection that is not silver in color), a 1970 Lamborghini Miura, a 1965 Maserati Mistral Spyder, a 1964 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8-liter coupe, a 1973 Maserati Ghibli 4.9 SS coupe, and our feature 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Split Window Coupe.

The Corvette Split Window Coupe is Sebring Silver metallic with a red vinyl interior. It is equipped with a 327 cubic-inch, 340-horsepower engine, with a four-speed manual gearbox. It has been the subject of a fastidious restoration prior to Mr. Peart’s purchase in 2011. It will be headed to the auction block at the Gooding & Company Monterey Car Week sale this August in Monterey, California. Pre-sale estimates value the Corvette at $150,000-$180,000.

More dealers look for new online sources for used cars

More dealers look for new online sources for used cars

????????????????????????????????????

Increasing numbers of dealers are signing up to source used cars and vans online as stock shortages increasingly impact on their businesses, epyx is reporting.

Its 1link Trade Buyer platform  is used by fleets such as leasing companies to sell cars and vans to a community of more than 3,500 independent and franchise traders.

The company said 55 new dealers signed up in May, 49 in April and 57 in March. In 2019, the most recent comparable year, the equivalent figures were much lower – 37 in May, 33 in April and 39 in March.

Debbie Fox, commercial director at epyx, said: “Dealers are finding that they cannot obtain all of the stock they want and need from their usual sources and are looking to new outlets in order to attempt to make up the shortfall.

“Especially, they appear to be signing up to digital sources such as 1link Trade Buyer because they are able to search through larger amounts of stock much more rapidly and effectively than through more traditional methods.

“At a point in time when stock is in such short supply and dealers are having to cast their nets much more widely, digital routes are providing an effective alternative.”

She added that she expected the situation to persist and even become more acute over the course of the remainder of 2021.

2022 Chevy Corvette Order Guide Shows “Hidden” Additions and a Departure

2022 Chevy Corvette Order Guide Shows “Hidden” Additions and a Departure

Much has been written about the Chevy Corvette’s third model year in C8 iteration, although the rumored Z06 and other versions are still nowhere in sight. But every time the company shares another snippet of information, it turns out there’s even more to discuss. Both good and bad, unfortunately.

As a quick recap, Chevrolet embraced the 2022 model year for the Corvette with three new exterior colors, a special edition for both the coupe and convertible models, as well as a new low-profile spoiler. It also dropped a trio of low-selling shades to make way for the new Hypersonic Gray, Amplify Orange, and Caffeine. Additionally, it announced that just 1,000 units of the Corvette Stingray IMSA GTLM Championship Edition will be made available.

Even worse, the 2022 model year comes with a sensible price hike to $62,195, including destination freight charge (+$2,295 over 2021MY) for the coupe, while the convertible kicks off at $69,695, including DFC (+$1,200). The company has allowed Corvette fans to indulge in the pleasure of playing with the available options and features through the online visualizer tool, and just recently, it also published the 2022 Corvette order guide, according to a tip from our friends at corvetteblogger.com.

All fifty-five pages have been embedded below in PDF format for hours of planning for the perfect 2022 Corvette, but just in case anyone wants the quick rundown, it seems that more goodies were waiting to be uncovered. For example, the Corvette Team has failed to mention the new Visible Carbon Fiber door intake trim (LPO RWJ), the High Wing Spoiler in Visible Carbon Fiber (LPO 5Z5), and the Black Ground Effects (LPO 5V7).

Unfortunately, as a counterpoint to the option of adding even more carbon fiber on the Corvette, it seems the company has decided the slow-selling Pewter-painted aluminum wheels (5DG) are no longer needed. The option is nowhere to be found in the new order guide, and it seems it has bit the dust alongside the closely-matching Zeus Bronze exterior color.

Dutchman arrested for allegedly selling used cars with fake registration

Dutchman arrested for allegedly selling used cars with fake registration

Thai Immigration police arrested a 35 year old man from the Netherlands who ran a dodgy used car business where he allegedly faked the vehicle registrations. Police say he was also overstayed his visa by 10 years.

Police identified the Dutchman as Stanley Richy. They say he ran a second-hand car business and had a business page on Facebook under the name “Car Planet.” Allegedly, Stanley would buy cars in Pattaya from people who couldn’t keep up with the payments, then sell the cars with a fake registration.

Police arrested him at Ramkhamhaeng Soi 72 in Bangkok, which was listed on a page under “Car Planet.”

Corvette C8.R Wins at Watkins Glen

Corvette C8.R Wins at Watkins Glen

Corvette Racing took the top spot in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class at IMSA’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen at Watkins Glen International. Though the pair of cars fielded by the Corvette Racing team swapped the lead throughout the race, both cars were behind driver John Edwards in the Number 24 BMW in the last 15 minutes of the race. A gutsy pass by Antonio Garcia with five laps remaining put the Number 3 C8.R Corvette in the lead, and Garcia held off the BMWs to the finish. The Number 3 Corvette started from the pole, and the duo of Garcia and Taylor spent most of the six-hour endurance race battling teammates Nick Tandy and Tommy Milner in the Number 4 C8.R until the last few laps when Tandy reported a mechanical issue that took the car out of contention. It finished the race in fourth place.

This was Jordan Taylor’s first win at Watkins Glen, and the multi-time 24 Hours of Daytona winner can finally cross that track off his list. “This is one of the only tracks I haven’t won here on the IMSA calendar Watkins Glen has always been a big one, the Six Hours especially. I grew up watching my dad race. He always talked about his favorite tracks, and Watkins Glen was always at the top of the list. I finished second in 2011 in Grand Am with Tommy Milner as my teammate, so it’s been high on the list every year,” Taylor said after the race.

Number 3 co-driver Antonio Garcia said, “It was another great battle with our teammates and the BMWs. They were all very strong. The start was a little confusing with all the debris in Turn One. I played it a little bit careful, and Tommy [Milner] went around me. From that point on, it was a flat-out fight with our teammates and the BMWs. “

The win at the Six Hours maintains Corvette Racing’s lead in the team standings as well as Garcia and Taylor’s lead in the drivers’ standings. The C8.R will be back on track July 1-2, again at Watkins Glen, for the IMSA WeatherTech 240. More info can be found at IMSA.com

Here's Why The Corvette C8 Engine Cover Stops Remote Start

Here’s Why The Corvette C8 Engine Cover Stops Remote Start

The Corvette C8 Stingray comes with a number of interesting little tricks, some of which may be confusing for new owners. That includes the remote engine starter and the way it functions when the C8’s engine cover is either open or closed. Now, GM Authority is here to shed some light on this.

For those who may be unaware, the Corvette C8 Stingray’s remote engine starter will cease to function when the vehicle’s engine cover is opened. If the remote start is used and the engine cover is opened, the engine will stop. What’s more, if the engine cover is already open and the remote engine starter is used, the starter will not work.

We caught up to Corvette Marketing Manager Harlan Charles, who provided some insight as to why the remote engine start feature functions in this way.

“It’s just like the hood of a car,” Charles told GM Authority. “On any car, if you open the hood, remote start will defeat or it won’t start.”

According to Charles, the reason behind the functionality comes down to safety.

“Imagine if someone was working on your car, and then someone started it when the person working on it isn’t ready? So it’s just for that – a safety feature,” Charles said.

“It’s a little different on the C8 because it’s your trunk, but it’s also your hood,” he added.

Notably, the feature only works this way for the Corvette C8 Stingray Coupe, as the Corvette C8 Stingray Convertible has a separate compartment for the engine and the rear cargo space.

It should also be noted that the engine will remain running if the user starts the engine using the push-button starter in the cabin, then opens the engine cover.

As a reminder, the C8 Corvette Stingray is powered by the mid-mounted, naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 LT2 gasoline engine, which is rated at 495 horsepower at 6,450 rpm and 470 pound-feet of torque at 5,150 rpm when equipped with the optional factory performance exhaust system.

Family that lost son in crash is hopeful Gov. Cuomo will sign law mandating airbags in used cars

Family that lost son in crash is hopeful Gov. Cuomo will sign law mandating airbags in used cars

By Tony Aiello

Click here for updates on this story

NEW YORK (WCBS) — A Rockland County family hopes Gov. Andrew Cuomo will sign a law banning the sale of used cars if the airbags are missing or don’t work.

Their effort is partly because the bill honors their son, but mostly because they believe it will save lives, CBS2’s Tony Aiello reported Monday.

His picture is on mom’s pendant and on dad’s tie, and now his name is on a bill sitting on the governor’s desk.

Anthony Amoros died in 2013 at age 18, after crashing his recently purchased used car on a windy stretch of Thiells Mount Ivy Road. His family said Amoros had no idea the airbag had been removed.

“He assumed there was an airbag in there, and of course, sadly and tragically, he learned that there wasn’t at the time of the accident,” Al Amoros said.

When the family began working with legislators, the idea was to craft a bill requiring used car dealers to simply disclose to buyers if the airbag was missing or not functioning. Sometimes they are not replaced after deployment or have been stolen.

Eventually, advocates decided it would be simpler and safer to just add airbags to the list of required equipment in used vehicles, such as seatbelts.

“You have to have rearview mirrors, so things like that. So at the end of the day, what we did statutorily was add airbags to that regulatory section,” Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski Jr. said.

Zebrowski said just as the industry opposed the original 1990s mandate requiring air bags in all passenger vehicles, it opposed this bill, too.

However, it passed the Legislature easily and now, after years of effort, only needs the governor’s signature to become law.

“Great accomplishments like this airbag law are performed not by strength but by determination,” Al Amoros said.

The family said of all the ways it has honored their son, this law is the one that matters most.

The governor’s office reviews all legislation before deciding whether to sign it into the law. It did not respond when asked if it plans to sign Anthony’s law.

Kerbeck Corvette Sold To Ciocca Dealerships Group

Kerbeck Corvette Sold To Ciocca Dealerships Group

Kerbeck Corvette, the world’s largest Corvette franchise, has been sold to Pennsylvania-based dealer group Ciocca Dealerships.

Located in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Kerbeck Corvette has been the largest dedicated Corvette dealership for the past 27 years. Ciocca Dealerships purchased the storefront this week, along with the adjacent Kerbeck Chevrolet Buick GMC and Kerbeck Cadillac storefronts that sit on the same plot of land on Atlantic City’s south side.

“We are very pleased to announce the company’s expansion into the Atlantic City market,” Ciocca CEO and founder Gregg Ciocca said in a prepared statement. “Everyone is excited to become involved in the community and meet our new customers and team members in Atlantic City. The energy and growth in this area made this an exciting opportunity to add to our family of dealerships.”

Kerbeck Corvette will be renamed Ciocca Corvette following the acquisition. While the name is set to change, Ciocca says the same team of sales experts will continue to represent the dealership going forward.

According to data compiled by Corvette Blogger, Kerbeck Corvette sold 866 examples of the Chevy Corvette in 2020 – making it the largest Corvette dealer by sales volume on the planet. Mac Mulkin Chevrolet Cadillac in Nashua, New Hampshire was second at 778 units, followed by Les Stanford Chevrolet Cadillac in Dearborn, Michigan at 321 units.

Ciocca Dealerships’ purchase of a dedicated Corvette storefront comes amid high demand for the American sports car. GM sold out of its 2021 model year run of the C8 Corvette Stingray and decided to switch to production of the 2022 Corvette early to help better deal with demand. However production setbacks brought on by complications from the COVID-19 pandemic have also caused inventory shortages at dealerships – a problem that GM hopes to address as the effects of the pandemic wane in the coming months.

  • A big fighter in the battle for used cars on the Web

A big fighter in the battle for used cars on the Web

Anyone in auto retail with an Internet connection — which one would think is just about everyone at this point — should know that the effort to buy used vehicles from consumers has largely moved to the Web.

Customer-sourced cars, of course, can still come from the service lane and good old-fashioned trade-ins that arrive on the dealership lot. But when inventory is as badly needed as it is now, dealers more than ever are turning to the Internet for leads.

Some search for vehicles on Facebook or Craigslist, for example. Some have added “we’ll buy your car” buttons and cash-offer tools to their websites.

On the latter front, CarMax says it has found success partnering with Edmunds, which it has acquired, to offer an online cash appraisal and trade offer tool. With its national presence, the retailer may have a leg up here — and it sees the sky as the limit.

CEO Bill Nash said last week that the company bought about 163,000 cars from consumers in its fiscal first quarter ended May 31 using the tool developed with Edmunds. That represented almost half of all the vehicles it bought from consumers.

Asked in a call with analysts whether that 50 percent mark is a target, Nash said the company’s goal is to drive that rate “as high as possible.”

Nash also was asked about the “wacky” supply environment, in which good inventory is hard to come by.

“Obviously, the buying directly from consumers has been a big focus,” he said. “I’ve talked about putting investment in that area. I think what you’re seeing is really coming to fruition.”

CarMax says it is now the largest online buyer of used vehicles in the U.S. Still, even with major online initiatives, the good old-fashioned in-person trade-in hasn’t gone away.

“We’re also encouraged just by the traditional [method] with customers coming in the store and doing appraisals that way,” Nash said. “So, you know, we feel good about both of those.”

Are There Car Loans for People with Bad Credit?

Are you looking for a car loan, but you have bad credit? Have you been turned down for car loans in the past? There may be options available to you that you haven’t considered. Read on for details about bad credit car loans.

Bad Credit Car Loans: Where’s the Deal?

First of all, let’s be honest. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is, right? Well, I don’t think car loans for people with bad credit are the exception to the rule, since there are some definite financial drawbacks to such loans. For some people, however, these loans are the only option available.

    Available Loans

Many companies offer car loans to people with bad credit, as long as you have a stable work history and are making more than $1,500 a month gross. You’ll have to prove your income and work history with pay stubs or tax records. You may also be required to make a $2,000 to $3,000 down payment, if you’ve had a repossession or collection account during the past year. If you do qualify for one of these car loans, your interest rate will likely be much higher than most banks would charge.

    Avoiding the Need

Obviously, the best way to avoid having to resort to bad credit car loans is to keep your credit in good standing. Always pay your debts on time – late payments really hurt. The credit bureaus keep track of 30-, 60-, and 90-day late payments. If you are 120 days late on a bill, your delinquent account will likely be sent to collections. Nearly every type of business will send your account to collections if you’re 120 days past due, including hospitals, cell phone companies, and utility providers (power, gas, phone, etc.). Once this happens, your credit score drops like a rock, sayshttps://kreditus.eu/lt/paskolu-palyginimas/greitieji-kreditai. By the way, late payments and collections stay on your credit report for seven years, and bankruptcies remain for ten years, so be responsible. Otherwise, you may find yourself needing these car loans because of your bad credit.

    Alternatives

Ever heard of a cosigner? This is probably your best alternative to bad credit car loans. Finding someone with a strong credit score to cosign on the loan will save you from having to pay the high interest rates associated with these car loans. In addition, having a cosigner will allow you to increase your credit score as you consistently make your loan payments on time. This may be the best way to get your score high enough so you won’t have to look for these high interest rate car loans in the future. Just make sure to make your payments on time — you don’t want to ruin the credit of someone who is helping you out.

Report: Chevy Corvette Z06 Delayed Until At Least 2023

Report: Chevy Corvette Z06 Delayed Until At Least 2023

A Chevrolet Corvette is fast. But a Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is faster.

Since the Corvette’s second generation appeared in 1963, a new Corvette has usually meant a new Corvette Z06. Z06 models take the standard Corvette and add parts from the Chevy racing bin. Literally. The first Z06 was concocted to give race teams a way to buy a ‘Vette for their purposes at a time when GM wouldn’t officially support racing. It was a wink-wink, nudge-nudge race car you could buy from your local Chevy dealer.

A Corvette Z06 traditionally commands a higher price than anything else except the ZR1 in the Corvette stable. But performance tweaks often push the car to European supercar speeds without the associated price tag only the ultra-wealthy can afford.

The Corvette was radically redesigned for the 2020 model year, moving to a mid-engine layout for its eighth generation. So… uh… where’s our Z06?

    2023 …Or Later

Not coming this year, according to a report from GMAuthority.com. The site – usually quite reliable about GM’s plans – says that Chevy has been working on a Z06 since the first eighth-generation Corvette Stingray appeared. But it reportedly won’t be sold until the 2023 model year at the earliest.

Chevy Can’t Build Corvettes Fast Enough

The reason? The existing Corvette Stingray is selling as fast as GM can build it. A combination of high demand and problems getting enough parts from suppliers to keep up has left the Corvette the fastest-selling car in America. In mid-May, Chevy held just a 6-day supply of Stingrays (the industry had about 35 days’ worth of the average car that month, which is a historically low number).  The company can’t commit to building another version of the car when it can barely keep up with demand for the current one.

GMAuthority reports that “the launch of the C8 Corvette Z06 has now been pushed back to the 2023 model year.”

    Might Be Worth the Wait

The eighth-generation Z06 may be worth the wait when it does come. Reports say its 5.5-liter V8 will put out more than 600 horsepower. The current model gets 490, which is enough to send it from a stop to 60 mph in about 3 seconds.

If you must have a high-performance Corvette in the meantime, the fastest current model is the 2022 Corvette Stingray IMSA GTLM Championship Edition. It includes the performance tweaks of the Z51 package, plus a race-derived wing to enhance grip.

Bill requiring airbag in used cars heads to Cuomo’s desk

Democratic state lawmakers on Tuesday called for the final approval of a bill that would require used cars sold at retail level in New York to contain a working airbag.

The measure, backed by Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski and Sen. James Skoufis, was approved earlier this year in honor of a Hudson Valley man who was killed in a car crash at the age of 18. The car, unbeknownst to Anthony Amoros or his family, did not contain airbags when it was purchased as a used vehicle.

Since the crash, Amoros’ family has become advocates for car safety measures.

“Anthony Amoros was a vibrant young man taken far too soon as a result of a highly preventable accident,” Skoufis said. “I’ve been honored to work closely with the Amoros family and Assemblymember Zebrowski on this commonsense issue for many years, and I am humbled to know that many more lives will be saved as a result of our work and the Amoros’ tireless advocacy. Anthony’s legacy will extend far beyond his Rockland County hometown, ensuring used vehicles throughout the state meet minimum airbag safety standards and keep drivers safe. I urge the governor to sign this legislation immediately.”

Lawmakers called the current law allowing the sale of cars without functioning airbags a loophole that needs to be addressed. The bill now heading to Cuomo’s desk would bar car dealers from selling used cars without a functioning airbag included.

“The current loophole in state law leaves countless motorists vulnerable to potentially driving vehicles without the most critical safety device. Establishing Anthony Amoros’ Law in New York State is a common-sense and life-saving measure,” Zebrowski said. “The pain that the Amoros family has gone through in losing their son is unfathomable, but their advocacy on his behalf is admirable. I am honored to work with the Amoros’ in remembrance of Anthony to ensure this type of tragedy is prevented in the future.”

“This law will benefit New York State consumers because it will mandate that anyone who sells a used car, must inform the buyer of any problems with the airbags. This includes airbags which are non-functional or missing. The goal of this law is to protect public safety by making the public aware of the dangers of having a vehicle with non-functional or missing airbags and the risk to life and limb when they are not working properly or not in the car at all. The law also explains the lifesaving capability of the airbags,” said Al Amoros, Anthony’s father.

Jeff Gordon’s Cyber Gray Corvette ZR1 Up for Grabs With 835-Miles on Its LS9 V8

Well, if you’re a car guy, they don’t get much famous than one Mr. Jeffery Michael Gordon, a.k.a. Jeff Gordon, who’s amassed more NASCAR achievements and awards than we can count. Literally. It’s tiring just looking at his Wikipedia page.

Anyway, not even Gordon can take the spotlight off this 2009 Corvette ZR1, which was delivered to him brand new at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and was subsequently sold for charity in April of last year. The best part? It’s only been driven for 835 miles (1,344 km), and it’s now available through Bring a Trailer.

Aside from being a low mileage example, this Vette also happens to be one of just 502 units finished in Cyber Gray Metallic for the 2009 model year. Other highlights include the carbon fiber hood, fenders, and floor panels, xenon headlights, heated mirrors, rear spoiler, ZR1 badging, 19/20-inch wheels front and rear, plus carbon-ceramic brakes with blue multi-piston calipers.

The cabin, which looks impeccable, comes with Ebony leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable seats, the Memory Package, carbon fiber trim, dual-zone climate control, head-up display, Bose sound system, and more.

Finally, the powertrain is a 6.2-liter supercharged LS9 V8 rated at 638 hp (647 PS) and 604 lb-ft (819 Nm) of torque. Everything goes to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox, making this a true driver’s car. As for its straight-line prowess, GM says that you can max it out at 205 mph (330 kph), which is about as fast as Jeff Gordon’s old no. 24 Chevrolet used to be on an oval track.

Win a Corvette sculpture from Amalgam Collection

Win a Corvette sculpture from Amalgam Collection

Amalgam Collection is known for creating some of the world’s most “iconic and luxurious cars at scale,” the company states on its website.

From Aston Martins and McLarens to Porsches and F1 racers, Amalgam models are intended to capture every aspect of the original car so that, in a photograph, it’s near impossible to discern from an actual car, the company notes.

“Models are made using the finest-quality casting resins that replicate our perfectly designed patterns in every minute detail,” Amalgam says. “It can take over 4,000 hours to develop a 1:8 scale prototype, and each subsequent model takes between 250 and 450 hours to cast, fit, fettle, paint and build.”

Among their many collections is a range of stunning miniature sculptures (4 inches long) of all Chevrolet Corvette models designed by automotive designer Remco de Reus.

“Each sculpture is hand-cast in stone filled resin, hand finished, primed and plated in aluminum, followed by five coats of spray painting with a tinted lacquer,” the company notes.

The ClassicCars.com Journal is excited to offer its readers the chance to win either a C2 Corvette or C8 Corvette Amalgam sculpture.

For the classic Corvette enthusiasts, this C2 sculpture is accented in a light gold finish and highlights the model’s long hood, two-piece front and rear bumpers and vertical side vents.

And for the modern collectors, the C8 sculpture that’s finished in silver features the new intake side vents and the mid-engine hood vents.

Enter to win one of these Corvette Amalgam sculptures by filling out the form below. When entering, make sure to select whether you would like to win the C2 or C8 sculpture.

The winner will be chosen on July 12.

Man smashes Corvette in middle of night, owner searching for suspects

Man smashes Corvette in middle of night, owner searching for suspects

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – An early morning vandal left a Fargo family’s Corvette smashed and searching for clues to solve the case.

You can just barely see it in the family’s security footage as it unfolds just before four Sunday morning in the 700 block of 17th St. S., with the suspect kicking in the car’s back window and smashing its rearview mirrors. The Corvette was parked in the front yard, just feet from where Sharon Akin’s brother and his family were sleeping.

“Unfortunately, this is turning into typical behavior within our neighborhood,” Sharon Akin said. Akin’s brother is the owner of the Corvette and Akin lives just down the block from him.

While what happened is disappointing, Akin says she and her family aren’t totally shocked. She says the neighborhood has gained a lot of foot traffic over the last few years, and with it has been a lot of trouble.

“We’ve had several car break-ins. Both of my neighbors have had vehicle windows broken out, things stolen. We’ve found used needles, alcohol containers and bottles,” Akin said.

Both akin and other neighbors say the problems seem to stem from the apartment complexes near the area, but say so far, it hasn’t pushed them over the edge to want to move.

“We all have cameras up, security systems, we keep our houses locked, our cars locked, our garages locked. This is just what we deal with,” she said.

Akin says her brother has already installed more cameras. The family is hoping others in the area will look back at any footage they have from late Saturday night into early Sunday morning to better identify the man responsible.

“Anything suspicious, anybody running through the neighborhood, walking around in their yard, call Fargo Police,” Akin said. “All we can tell is that he’s tall and that he’s a male.”
