The battle between the Shelby Super Snake and Chevrolet Corvette ZL1 for the ‘Ultimate Classic American Muscle’ crown has been eternal.

The Shelby Super Snake was the only example that rolled out from Shelby’s workshop. Initially, the 1967 Shelby GT500 Super Snake was built in collaboration with Goodyear tires. Goodyear planned to test and promote its ‘Thunderbolt’ tires while the Super Snake was riding on it. The best part of this car’s legacy was that Caroll Shelby himself took the test drive of the car for about 500 miles while often touching the top speed of 170 mph. Both the car and tires passed the test with flying colors.

On the other hand, the Chevrolet Corvette ZL1 was the ace performer of the classic American muscle car era. The ZL1 and the previous L88 were the most popular cars of the segment with a distinctly odd appearance. The ZL1 was packed with a mighty engine that produced 430 HP; however, there were rumors that the car could actually produce well over 500 HP. Its production started in 1967, continuing until 1969, and within this period, only 216 L88s were built. Unfortunately, for Chevy and Corvette lovers, the company sold most of the L88s to racing teams rather than the general public.

While the Shelby Super Snake GT500 is a prime example of Shelby’s marvelous creation, the Corvette ZL1 has a solid evergreen legacy.

The Shelby GT500 Super Snake was essentially a Ford Mustang with a fastback design and thicker rear end from the outside. The most iconic element of the car were its three blue stripes running from the hood towards the rear. At the front, the vehicle sported four headlights, two of which were placed inside the specially designed grille groove. The grille was slim with a Super Snake badge on it. On the rear, the car featured large horizontal bar tail lamps. Dimension-wise, the Super Snake was 187 inches long with a 108-inch wheelbase. The vehicle, likewise, had 71 inches of width and a total curb weight of 3,287 lbs.

The classic Chevrolet Corvette ZL1 adopted a distinct shark body with its sloping front end and bulging fenders. The marine creature design concept was rightly reflected with gill-shaped heat extractors on the sides of the fenders. On the rear, wide haunches were added that gave the car a curvaceous look. The square-shaped headlights popped from the front edge of the hood, and below that, the lower grille housed round turn signals. The car had only one side mirror at the driver’s side and was equipped with vacuum-operated windshield wipers, along with stylish chrome bumpers at both ends.

The Shelby Super Snake had a four-seater interior with two sport bucket seats at the front and a bench seat at the rear. The interior was designed with great emphasis on the driver’s comfort. At the driving console, there was a large three-spoke steering wheel with uniquely placed gauges behind it. The gauges were placed in a zigzag manner where large round gauges were placed at the bottom, and smaller gauges were placed in between the bigger ones, in the upper margin of the panel.

The Chevrolet Corvette ZL1 sported an elegant and fresh interior with saddled colored accents and fittings with vinyl upholstered seats. The steering wheels and paddles were adjustable as the driving seat was in a fixed position. It had a large, slim steering wheel with large dial gauges in the background on the dash.

Shelby Super Snake Vs Chevrolet Corvette: Engine

The Super Snake was powered by a 7.0-liter Ford Big-Block FE 427 straight from the Ford GT40 racing program. The engine was mated with a 4-speed manual transmission that powered the rear wheels. The upgraded Ford engine produced 520 HP and 500 lb-ft of torque. Owing to this, the car could do a 0 to 60 mph run in 4.3 seconds with a top speed of 170 mph.

On the other hand, the Corvette ZL1 was powered by a 427 cu-in cast iron V8 with an enhanced compression ratio of 12.5:1. For the L88 version, the engine was equipped with some performance boosters like aluminum heads, forged internals, a unique induction system, and a 4-barrel Holley carb. As per Chevrolet’s estimation, the engine produced 430 HP, but several users claimed that the actual figure was well over 500 HP. Chevy buyers could also opt for a transistorized ignition and four-speed manual transmission to further enhance performance improvement. The car could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4 seconds and could do a quarter-mile run in 12.1 seconds with a top speed of 116 mph.

The Shelby Super Snake and the Chevrolet Corvette are both icons of the American muscle car era. While the former was the bright example of the legendary Carol Shelby’s outstanding craftsmanship, the latter was the epitome of an authentic American muscle with a glorious racing history.
